Our history

Since our historic opening in Kowloon in 1972 and merged with Hong Kong-based Chesterton Petty in 2006, Knight Frank has expanded its reach to Mainland China with wholly owned offices in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Macau. Today, Knight Frank’s Hong Kong office has become the region’s leading property consultancy.

We didn’t get where we are today without hard work. The creation of the modern practice dates back to 1972, when the local firm Tony Petty & Associates merged with the Knight Frank Global Network. Soon Knight Frank enveloped Tony Petty to open its wholly owned Asia Pacific headquarters. Today the firm is the leading real estate consultancy practice in Greater China, covering the residential and commercial markets.

Significant dates in Knight Frank's history:

1896 Knight Frank & Rutley is founded as a valuation and auction business in London.

1910 Knight Frank moves its global headquarters to Hanover Square.

1922 Knight Frank sells Sir Winston Churchill’s house for him – and promptly sells him back a new one!

1983 Knight Frank & Rutley joins with a leading Hong Kong surveyor to form Knight Frank Kan and Baillieu.

2006 Knight Frank Hong Kong merged with Chesterton Petty and begins expansion into Mainland China.

2006 Knight Frank forms a partnership with New York based Newmark, becoming Newmark Knight Frank, to provide corporate advisory and tenant solutions worldwide.

2008 98 years after arriving in Hanover Square times are changing – Knight Frank moves to Baker Street, relocating more than 850 staff to an open plan 100,000 sq ft office.

2011 Knight Frank has 243 worldwide offices in 43 countries on six continents with over 7,000 worldwide staff including affiliates.
